Hydrogen peroxide has been used as a disinfectant for many years because it is effective and has no harmful effects on human health or the environment in low concentrations. Hydrogen peroxide is highly reactive and reacts with all organic materials, including the biological membranes of bacteria, viruses and fungi. It is therefore an effective disinfectant against these organisms. Hydrogen peroxide can be used to disinfect the skin and various surfaces, and with cold evaporation it can also be used to disinfect entire rooms
As already mentioned, hydrogen peroxide works quickly. However, it then degrades and loses its effectiveness, allowing any surviving organisms to multiply again. We have therefore added silver ions to the formulation, which provide a longer-lasting antimicrobial effect as they remain on the disinfected surface. We looked for a suitable silver complex that would not impair the stability of the peroxide, as hydrogen peroxide quickly begins to decompose in the presence of free metal ions. Silver citrate proved to be the most suitable, and citrate ions also have a bactericidal effect.
